University presidents make national push to lower drinking age

Over 120 university presidents across the nation have said they would like to talk about lowering the minimum drinking age. A Web site called the Amethyst Initiative has collected the signatures of at least 128 university presidents on a statement claiming the legal drinking age of 21 has allowed "a culture of dangerous, clandestine 'binge-drinking'" to develop.…

The construction plans for what was to be the largest building on campus have been sent back to the drawing board. The minimum bids for the new Science building were considerably higher than the budget would allow, construction of the building has been postponed.…

Residential parking spaces removed on two campus streets

Over the summer, EKU helped combat the notorious parking problem-or did they? The University Parking Advisory Committee recently made the recommendation of removing parking spaces along Kit Carson and Park Drive to EKU President Doug Whitlock. In total, 65 parking spaces were removed from the two streets; 51 from Kit Carson and 14 Park Drive.…

University bookstore gets an overhaul, gives books some breathing room

While most EKU students spent their summer soaking up rays or earning the cash they needed to pay for tuition, drastic changes were underway on Eastern's campus. One of the most comprehensive face-lifts of the summer was performed on the EKU Bookstore. In addition to installing new carpet and tile floors, a new ceiling and new signage storewide, the store added a reading lounge complete with Wi-Fi Internet access and a variety of ne w products.…

Hazing case to go to court

Last semester, the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity was suspended after allegations by junior Brent Whiteside claiming several members of the fraternity had repeatedly physically abused him. Whiteside reportedly wound up in the hospital due to the abuse. The semester ended without a resolution to the issue, but the summer saw several developments in the story.…

Minimum ACT score for Eastern admission will rise

In order to receive full admission to Eastern, this year's incoming freshmen were required to graduate from high school with a 2.0 minimum grade point average and score no lower than 18 on the ACT, composite or in any subject. However, students applying for full admission in 2009 may have to step it up to meet some new standards.…

When The Paddy Wagon pub burned down last year a major blow was struck to Richmond's bar scene. The flames claimed a popular student hangout, leaving many former patrons searching for a new haunt. An EKU residence hall was recently reopened to students, after having a year off for a facelift. Last May it was announced that Clay Hall, the co-ed dorm behind Case and Burnam, would receive $7.5 million worth of major infrastructure renovations. The alterations included plumbing, new air conditioning systems, electrical systems, and new windows.…
