Stephen King's first editor and publisher was scheduled to be on campus Friday through Sunday to aid writers in personal growth, but the workshop will now be on Dec. 9-11.

Michael Barrett, editorial associate of the Writer's Digest School, will teach a three-day workshop to train unpublished writers and help them become published.

The series consists of five workshops - A Guide to Self Publication, Screenwriting for the Movies, How to Become a Published Author, Short Story and Novel Feedback and Creating Your Novel.

Barrett will also cover how to find a literary agent, how to write query letters and how to become contracted with a major publisher.

Manager and CEO of Development Christine Bogie said she has been at Eastern for seven years, and Barrett has taught a workshop for each one.

"He gets excellent evaluations, and that's why we have him back," Bogie said.

It is the goal of the continuing education department and the outreach program to provide personal and professional development for the community and the faculty, staff and students at Eastern, Bogie said.

"His classes are small and personal," said Bogie.

There are more than 130 classes that are offered by the continuing education department and nearly 40 professional development courses each semester, Bogie said.

Bogie said she hopes participants will leave Barrett's workshop with "the encouragement, connections and advice they need to see their writing maybe develop into a marketable product," Bogie said.

There are "a lot of reasons" why people should sign up for Barrett's three-day workshop, Bogie said.

She said "enjoyment, dreams and professional aspirations" are among those reasons.

Each workshop is taught separately, and participants are not required to attend all of those that are available, Bogie said.

There is a $42 fee for the daytime workshop and $64 for the night series.

The money received from participants will go to pay for workshop expenses like registration, ads, information cards and other presentation items. It also pays for the speaker, Bogie said.

"It goes to pay Mr. Garrett," Bogie said. "He travels in from Alabama."

The money also goes toward the community education staff fees, Bogie said.

The workshop will be held downstairs in the Perkins Building.

Those who are interested in the Personal Growth workshops with Michael Garrett should call 622-2001 to register.

Students can also log on to www.manuscriptcritique.com for free writing advice.

Registration is strongly recommended because seats are limited.
