The top seeded and defending champion Colonel's volleyball team fell to third seeded Jacksonville State University in a five-game title match of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Nov. 20.
The Colonels came into the tournament winners of their last nine matches and winners of their second consecutive regular season OVC title.
The Colonels battled back after losing the first game of the match 30-20 to the Gamecocks. The Colonels led 11-9 in the deciding fifth game before Jacksonville came back to take six of the final seven points for their first OVC championship.
The Colonels entered the tournament as the favorite to defend their title from last season, but the Colonels were a little off their game and the Gamecocks came out hitting on all cylinders and played extremely well.
After dropping the first game and trailing for most of game two, the Colonels fought back to tie the score at 21 thanks to a big block by junior Kasha Brozek and sophomore Shelly George.
The Colonels then took their first lead of the game at 23-22 on a kill by sophomore Amy Arlinghaus.
With the score tied at 26, the Colonels scored five of the last six points to even the match at one game apiece.
Jacksonville regrouped and stormed back to take game three 30-27.
The defending champion Colonels once again rallied in game four, winning 30-25.
The Gamecocks, playing their third match in three days, refused to wilt and completed the upset by taking game five 15-12.
Sophomore Brittany Nobilio led the Colonels with a team high 29 digs, while junior Jessica Sabath had 14 kills followed by Arlinghaus and George with 13 each.
The Colonels advanced to Sunday's title game by sweeping Southeast Missouri State, in three games, on Saturday, by scores of 30-23, 30-24 and 30-22, Saturday.
Senior Liz Guard and junior Jessica Jennings were named to the all-tournament team along with Suzi Terrell, Abbey Breit and Kisha West of Jacksonville State, Jill Miller of SEMO and Meesha Jackson of Tennessee State.
The Colonels finished the season with a 23-7 record and going undefeated at McBrayer Arena for the second consecutive season.
