It's easy to picture: a college student sitting at home on the couch or in their dorm bored out of their mind, searching the Web for any kind of entertainment, whether it be watching random Youtube videos late at night, or Facebook-stalking your classmates. One Eastern student took it upon herself, one boring night, to enter all the contests 98.1 "The Bull" had on its website.
Never expecting to actually win anything, Laura Donnell, a senior broadcasting major from Lancaster, Ky., received an email from 98.1 during her night class.
"It said 'call us within 30 minutes. You've won a prize!' I thought, 'ok, maybe a gas card or something,'" Donnell said.
Instead of a gas card, she had won a five-day trip to Oslo, Norway to see Toby Keith perform in his first world tour.
"I didn't believe them," Donnell said, "I called my mom and she said, 'don't give them any information.'"
The station persisted to get Laura's information and asked if she would be able to go. She finally realized that this wasn't a joke. She had actually won a complimentary, five-day trip to see Toby Keith in concert - in Norway.
The contest winners will be staying at the Radisson Hotel in Oslo, which is located right next to the venue, Oslo Spektrum, a multi-hall used for concerts, conventions, exhibitions, sports and can hold up to 9,700 people.
Laura, along with her boyfriend Nick, who went as her guest, flew out of Louisville Wednesday, Nov. 18, to Newark, New Jersey. From there, she, along with the five other winners and their guests, took a flight straight to Oslo, Norway.
The trips to and from Norway are approximately one day each.
"I couldn't believe only five people in America had the chance to win," Donnell said. "CMT was giving one away, a couple other radio stations and Toby Keith's fan club gave one away."
During their first two days in Oslo, contest winners will be free to do whatever they like.
"We thought about dog sledding or a sleigh ride," Donnell said.
She and her boyfriend enjoy the outdoors and thought something like that would be perfect. She was also interested in visiting the castles and museums in Oslo. The concert is on the last night of the trip, Nov. 21. The five winners and each of their guests will meet and greet with Toby Keith as a group before the concert, get their backstage passes and tickets the go straight to the concert. They will then depart Sunday morning, Nov. 22 for their journey home. "I've never been out of the country," Donnell said. "I had to deal with getting my passport so this will be a new experience."
