My turn: Office Depot a slice of heaven

Issue date: 11/19/09 Section: Perspective
Last Saturday I took some time to visit my "happy place." Everyone has one. That place in the world you can escape to and everything seems right, even if it's just for a few minutes.
When I arrived, I took deep breaths, filling my lungs with the aromatic scent that hung in the air.
As I let the automatic doors close behind me, I picked up a hand basket and smiled as I took in the aisles and aisles of office supplies.
Ah, yes. Office Depot - a little place I like to think of as my piece of Heaven on earth.
I don't know if there's really any way to truly explain my love for office supplies, but I'm going to try.
First, I let myself wander over to the aisle with small, paper office supplies. I spent my first few minutes browsing through the Post-It note section.
My current collection of Post-Its now amounts to twelve different colors, and some are even in the shape of hearts and flowers.
I write to-do lists on them and pull them off the wall when I'm done and find the greatest feeling of accomplishment. They help me organize the chaos and make a plan of action for all my deadlines.
After meandering through several more aisles of folders and legal pads, I made my way over to my second favorite place in the store - the marker aisle.
I couldn't resist picking up a new pack of Sharpies. I love removing the lid and pressing the tip of the marker to the paper for the first time, when I can make my first doodle on my fresh Post-It note pad.
I also picked up more staples to use in my miniature stapler, which also has the ability to open letters, store paper clips and remove staples.
I then crossed the store, testing out a few office chairs on the way, just like Goldilocks, and finally arrived in the personal planner section.
I spent nearly twenty minutes opening various planners, trying to find just the right one to point out to my mother for Christmas.
I've kept a pocket calendar in my purse since junior high, but I think I'm getting to that next stage in life where I can buy the leather covers that last forever and fill them with refill calendars each year.
When I finally left the store an hour later, I returned home to organize my new office supplies in my drawer organizer and desk lamp supply caddy, loading my arsenal for the many to-do lists to be made for the upcoming week.
Thank you Office Depot for putting your "sanity savers" on sale.
